The Write Life Campaign

The United States’ current economic and social crisis has caused a decline in morale.  The lack of confidence and hope is reported daily in the news. The Gallup poll reports “although Americans’ economic confidence is edging up, it is still low on an absolute basis, and economic concerns remain the dominant response when Americans are asked to name the most important problem facing the country.  As many lose jobs, homes and hope the young adults of this generation are left scrambling through the process of self discovery.

According to the National Alliance on mental health, “half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and three quarters by age 24. Early identification and intervention improve outcomes for children, before these conditions become far more serious, more costly and difficult to treat.” They report almost 5,000 suicides among young people, ages 15 to 24 each year. The rate of suicide for this age group has nearly tripled since 1960, making it the third leading cause of death in adolescents and the second leading cause of death among college-age youth.

Yet research supports the therapeutic and life sustaining capabilities of music as a solution to such hopelessness, especially for youth.  The Compendium on Music as a Natural Resource – solutions for social and economic issues, published by the United Nations, surveys nearly 100 organizations around the world that have impacted communities through music programs.  Music therapists, professors and musicians agree. Music plays a role in developing life skills, raising self esteem, supporting education and stabilizing communities. According to the National Association for Music Education, Music in schools contributes to student achievement in four important categories: Success in society, success in school and learning, success in developing intelligence and success in life.

As music transcends all boundaries, The Write Life campaign serves to connect corporations to communities. It can restore the grim image and mindset that Americans and the world have in regards to corporate conglomerates.  It is a solution for the evolving music industry and the future of music education.
